Data centers consume huge amounts of electricity every year. The power constraint is key factor for data center operators to increase rack server density, meanwhile a lot of provisioned power is reserved as the safe margin to handle the rarely peak power demand or power source failure, leading to considerable power under-utilization as well as implicated performance loss comparing to design target.

There are several ways to increase data center rack power utilization. One way is to monitor the environment and collect information about power usage at the cabinet, rack and device level. Built-in algorithms and user configurable policies ensure that the budget numbers are compliant with your predetermined risk factor, and budget numbers are automatically updated every week based on the latest readings. Using this feature, Comcast was able to get 40% more utilization out of their existing resources.

Most of the time, you don’t even know if you have stranded capacity and how much there is. Power, space, cooling, and data/power ports are the main capacity parameters in the data center.

Stranded capacity refers to installed capacity (cooling, power, space) that cannot be used to support the critical load. It occurs when an imbalance occurs between these three parameters that restrict the overall power efficiency of the data center. Power and cooling capacity become stranded when predicted IT power densities never materialize.
