9 Best Practices for Remotely Managing Your Colo Infrastructure

  1. Track and manage port capacity

As colocation environments grow increasingly dense and complex, you need to accurately inventory and track individual physical port types residing on every device to make the most informed decisions to improve planning for new equipment and services and aid in maintaining and troubleshooting colocation infrastructure.

“A lot of times I’m in a meeting and there’s a project coming up and we’re going to deploy some new equipment and we want to know what we have for connectivity,” said Tom Wysocki, Data Center Manager, KPMG. “What I’m able to do is bring up a visual of that switch and very quickly I can highlight what’s connected and what’s not connected. So if we’re in a project and I know there’s going to be ten servers and I’m going to need two connections per server, I can see I’ve got plenty of ports available and even assign those out now to the network team or the project leader and say, ‘These are the ports we’ll be utilizing,’ so they can go ahead and start getting them configured. We can start pre-cabling ahead of time and labeling and really move ahead on that project.

Minimize the impacts of Critical Application Outages

Much is written about business continuity and recovery of operations after a disaster. What about recovery of a system or application that experiences a lengthy outage and negatively impacts the day-to-day operations of a business?

FACT: 25% of businesses that close after a natural disaster never reopen

FACT: 40 percent of small businesses never reopen their doors following a disaster

I have yet to see the statistics identifying the impact of a lengthy outage of a critical application on a business. I am willing to bet that the disaster recovery statistics are representative of this scenario. So, what to do and how to mitigate this risk?

Data Center Consolidation and how it benefits your organization

Data Center consolidation is an organization’s strategy to reduce IT assets by using more efficient technologies. It is the converging of a Data Center infrastructure in order to either:

  1. Reduce the number of devices in a single Data Center, or
  2. Reduce the global footprint with fewer Data Centers and locations to manage, for example 4 down to 2.

So why should a company consider Data Center consolidation?

Data Center Infrastructure Refresh

Refreshing your IT Virtual Infrastructure

An aging IT infrastructure can lead to greater maintenance costs, increased downtime, out of support software and a skill set shortage in the marketplace. Companies have typically operated on a 3 to 5 year server and storage refresh cycle to address the problems associated with an aging IT infrastructure. Before undertaking an infrastructure refresh it is important to understand the business benefits, the costs and most importantly the business risks of undertaking a technology refresh. Keep in mind you may have to purchase some automated tools to support the migration of the data and the applications. Having a good understanding of these factors are paramount to a successful refresh program.
